Cross-curricular Extension Activity: Language and the Arts

You and your classmates work for the Canadian Dehydrated Food Company. You have decided to market your foods to astronauts who will be travelling to the Moon and then on to Mars. Working in groups of three, design and perform a commercial to sell your dehydrated foods. Record your planning and design notes in the journal you created for Activities 1 and 2.

  1. Get your facts straight. What foods will appear in your commercial? Why have you decided to choose them? Can you prove any claims you make about the foods?
  2. Write your script. Make sure there is a part for every person in your group.
  3. Storyboard your commercial. What graphics do you need? Where will you get them? Do you need a jingle for your commercial? How will you create it? What order do things happen in your commercial?
  4. Create your design elements - your visuals, costumes, music, sound effects.
  5. Produce your commercial. Put it all together and practice!
  6. Perform your commercial. Design a rubric with your teacher so your classmates can evaluate your work. Criteria you might want to include are: accuracy of information, clarity of expression, effectiveness of design elements, and use of performance techniques.
